Amazon Echo device with Homiio smart home devices — Alexa Academy guide

Why Alexa + Homiio Is the Perfect Combination

Amazon Alexa is the world’s most popular voice assistant, with over 500 million Alexa-enabled devices sold worldwide. Homiio devices connect directly to Alexa via the Tuya Smart skill — no hub, no bridge, no extra hardware required.

This guide walks you through everything: initial setup, the best voice commands, building powerful routines, and pro tips to get the most out of your Homiio + Alexa setup. New to smart home? Read our Beginner’s Guide first.

Step 1: Connect Homiio to Alexa

Before you can use voice commands, you need to link your Tuya Smart account to Alexa. Here’s how:

  1. Open the Amazon Alexa app on your phone (iOS / Android)
  2. Tap More → Skills & Games
  3. Search for “Tuya Smart” and tap Enable to Use
  4. Sign in with your Tuya Smart account credentials
  5. Tap Authorize to allow Alexa to access your devices
  6. Say “Alexa, discover devices” or tap Discover Devices in the app

All your Homiio devices will appear in the Alexa app within 30 seconds. That’s it — you’re ready to go.

Tip: If devices don’t appear, check our Troubleshooting guide for common fixes.

Essential Alexa Voice Commands for Homiio Devices

Once connected, these commands work immediately with all Homiio devices:

Smart Bulb Commands

  • “Alexa, turn on the bedroom light”
  • “Alexa, dim the living room light to 30%”
  • “Alexa, set the kitchen light to warm white”
  • “Alexa, change the light to blue”
  • “Alexa, turn off all lights”

Smart Plug Commands

  • “Alexa, turn on the coffee maker”
  • “Alexa, turn off the TV plug”
  • “Alexa, is the fan on?”

Motion & Door Sensor Commands

  • “Alexa, is the front door open?”
  • “Alexa, what’s the status of my motion sensor?”

Pro tip: Rename your devices in the Tuya app to natural names like “bedroom light” or “coffee maker” before linking to Alexa — it makes voice commands much more intuitive.

Creating Alexa Groups for Whole-Room Control

Groups let you control multiple devices with one command. For example, say “Alexa, turn off the living room” to switch off every device in that group.

  1. Open the Alexa app → tap Devices → tap + → Add Group
  2. Choose a room name (e.g., “Living Room”, “Bedroom”)
  3. Select all Homiio devices in that room
  4. Tap Save

Now “Alexa, goodnight” can turn off every light and plug in your bedroom at once.

Building Powerful Alexa Routines

Routines are where Alexa becomes truly powerful. A routine triggers multiple actions from a single command or schedule. Here are the best Homiio + Alexa routines to set up:

Morning Routine

Trigger: “Alexa, good morning”
Actions: Turn on kitchen light at 80% warm white → Turn on coffee maker plug → Announce “Good morning! Today is [date].”

Bedtime Routine

Trigger: “Alexa, goodnight” or Schedule at 10:30 PM
Actions: Dim bedroom light to 10% → Turn off all smart plugs → Announce “Goodnight. All devices are off.”

Movie Mode

Trigger: “Alexa, movie time”
Actions: Dim living room lights to 20% → Set color to warm amber → Turn on TV plug

Away Mode

Trigger: “Alexa, I’m leaving”
Actions: Turn off all lights → Turn off all plugs → Announce “Have a great day!”

Alexa Guard: Free Security Monitoring

If you have an Echo device, Alexa Guard is a free feature that listens for smoke alarms, carbon monoxide alarms, and breaking glass when you’re away. Combine it with your Homiio motion sensors and door sensors for a comprehensive security layer — all at no extra cost.

Troubleshooting Alexa + Homiio

Devices not discovered? Say “Alexa, discover devices” again, or re-link the Tuya Smart skill. See our Troubleshooting guide.

Wrong device responding? Rename devices in the Tuya app to unique names before re-discovering in Alexa.

Alexa says device is unresponsive? Check your 2.4 GHz WiFi connection. Homiio devices require 2.4 GHz — not 5 GHz.

Routine not triggering? Make sure the Tuya Smart skill is still enabled in the Alexa app under Skills & Games.
