The Smart Home Has a New Universal Language
If you’ve been shopping for smart home devices recently, you’ve probably seen the word “Matter” appearing on packaging and product listings. But what exactly is it, and do you need to care about it?
The short answer: Matter is the most important development in smart home technology in a decade. It’s a new universal standard that allows devices from different brands to work together seamlessly — without compatibility headaches, multiple apps, or ecosystem lock-in.
This guide explains everything in plain English. No jargon, no fluff.
What Is Matter?
Matter is an open-source smart home connectivity standard developed by the Connectivity Standards Alliance (CSA) — a coalition of over 550 companies including Apple, Google, Amazon, Samsung, and hundreds of device manufacturers.
Launched in October 2022, Matter’s goal is simple: make every smart home device work with every smart home platform. Before Matter, a Philips Hue bulb might not work with Google Home, or an Amazon device might not talk to Apple HomeKit. Matter eliminates that problem.
Think of it like USB-C for smart home — one universal standard that everything plugs into.
How Does Matter Work?

Matter runs over your existing home network using WiFi and Thread (a low-power mesh networking protocol). It also uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) for device commissioning (initial setup).
Here’s what that means in practice:
- A Matter-certified bulb from Brand A works natively in the Google Home app, Apple Home app, and Amazon Alexa — simultaneously
- You can control the same device from multiple apps without re-pairing
- Devices communicate locally (not through the cloud) for faster response times and better reliability
- Setup is standardized — scan a QR code and the device appears in any Matter-compatible app
Matter vs. Previous Standards
| Feature | Before Matter | With Matter |
|---|---|---|
| Cross-brand compatibility | Limited / unreliable | Universal |
| Setup process | Brand-specific app required | Scan QR code, works everywhere |
| Cloud dependency | Most commands go via cloud | Local processing, faster & reliable |
| Voice assistant support | One platform at a time | All platforms simultaneously |
| Privacy | Data sent to brand servers | Local control, less cloud exposure |
What Is Thread?
Thread is the networking protocol that Matter uses for battery-powered devices like sensors. Unlike WiFi, Thread creates a mesh network — each Thread device acts as a signal repeater, extending coverage throughout your home.
Thread requires a Thread Border Router — a device that bridges the Thread mesh to your WiFi network. Many modern smart home hubs (Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub 2nd gen, Amazon Echo 4th gen) include Thread Border Routers built in.
Key benefit: Thread devices use far less power than WiFi devices, making them ideal for battery-powered sensors with multi-year battery life.
Which Platforms Support Matter?

All major platforms now support Matter:
- Amazon Alexa — Full Matter support via Echo devices (4th gen+)
- Google Home — Full Matter support via Nest Hub and Nest WiFi Pro
- Apple HomeKit — Full Matter support via HomePod mini and Apple TV 4K
- Samsung SmartThings — Full Matter support
Do Homiio Devices Support Matter?
Current Homiio devices use the Tuya Smart platform over WiFi — which works excellently with Alexa and Google Home today. Tuya has announced Matter support and is actively rolling it out across its device ecosystem.
What this means for you:
- Current Homiio devices work perfectly with Alexa and Google Home via the Tuya Smart skill — no Matter required. See our Alexa Academy and Google Home Academy for setup guides.
- Future Homiio devices will support Matter natively as the standard matures
- Tuya’s Matter bridge allows some existing Tuya devices to appear as Matter devices in compatible apps
Should You Wait for Matter Before Buying?
No — and here’s why:
- WiFi devices work great today. Alexa and Google Home integration via Tuya Smart is reliable, fast, and feature-complete. You’re not missing anything by using WiFi devices now.
- Matter is still maturing. While the standard is live, device support and feature parity with existing platforms is still catching up. Many Matter devices still require a hub.
- Your investment is protected. Tuya-based devices will gain Matter compatibility through software updates and bridge devices — you won’t need to replace your existing setup.
The best approach: buy what works today, and Matter compatibility will come to you over time.
