So You Want a Smart Home — Where Do You Actually Start?
You've seen the ads. Lights that turn on automatically. A doorbell that shows you who's there from your phone. A thermostat that learns your schedule. It all looks amazing — but when you go to buy something, the options are overwhelming.
WiFi or Zigbee? Hub or no hub? Alexa or Google Home? Matter or Tuya?
This guide cuts through all of that. By the end, you'll know exactly what to buy first, how to set it up, and how to get your first automation running — all in one afternoon, no electrician required.
Step 1: Pick Your Voice Assistant First
Before you buy a single device, decide which voice assistant you want to use. This determines which devices will work best in your home.
- Amazon Alexa — Best ecosystem, widest device compatibility, great for routines
- Google Home — Best if you use Android or Google services heavily
- Apple HomeKit / Siri — Best for iPhone users who want tight Apple integration
All Homiio devices work with both Alexa and Google Home, so either choice works perfectly. Learn more in our Alexa Academy and Google Home Academy.
Step 2: Start With These 4 Devices (In This Order)
Don't try to automate everything at once. Start small, get comfortable, then expand. Here's the ideal starter order — or grab all four in the Homiio Starter Bundle and save.
1. Smart Bulb — The Easiest Win
A smart bulb is the fastest way to experience smart home. Screw it in, connect to the app, and you're done. No wiring, no tools. You can dim it, change colors, set schedules, and control it with your voice.
What to look for: WiFi-based (no hub needed), E26 base (standard US fitting), works with Alexa and Google Home. See our Buying Guides for a full breakdown.

2. Smart Plug — Make Any Device Smart
A smart plug turns any regular appliance into a smart device. Plug in your lamp, fan, coffee maker, or TV — and now you can control it remotely, set schedules, and monitor energy usage. Read more about energy saving with smart plugs.
Pro tip: Plug in your bedside lamp and set it to turn on at sunrise. Instant morning routine.

3. Motion Sensor — Your First Automation
A motion sensor is where smart home gets genuinely useful. When it detects movement, it can trigger lights, send you an alert, or kick off a whole routine. No hub required with WiFi models. Get inspired with our Automation Ideas.
Great first automation: Motion detected in hallway at night → turn on hallway light at 20% brightness.

4. Door & Window Sensor — Security Peace of Mind
Know the moment a door or window opens. Great for front doors, kids' rooms, medicine cabinets, or any entry point you want to monitor. Instant push alerts to your phone. Learn more in our Home Security guides.

Step 3: Download the App and Connect Your Devices
Most WiFi smart home devices use the Tuya Smart or Smart Life app — they're the same platform, just different branding. All Homiio devices use this ecosystem.
- Download Tuya Smart or Smart Life from the App Store or Google Play
- Create a free account
- Tap the + button to add a device
- Follow the in-app instructions — usually takes under 2 minutes per device
- Once added, link the app to Alexa or Google Home for voice control
Important: Make sure your phone is connected to a 2.4 GHz WiFi network during setup (not 5 GHz). Most routers broadcast both — check our Troubleshooting guide if you run into issues.
Step 4: Create Your First Automation
This is where it gets fun. Open the Tuya/Smart Life app and go to Automations. Here are three beginner automations to try first — or browse our full Automation Ideas library for more:
- Bedtime routine: At 10:30 PM → turn off all lights
- Motion night light: Motion detected between 11 PM and 6 AM → turn on hallway light at 30%
- Away mode: When you leave home → turn off all smart plugs and lights
Each automation takes about 60 seconds to set up in the app. According to the U.S. Department of Energy, smart home automation can reduce energy consumption by up to 15%.
Common Beginner Mistakes to Avoid
- Buying a hub before you need one — WiFi devices work without any hub. Start hubless. Read our Buying Guide to understand when a hub makes sense.
- Mixing ecosystems — Stick to one app (Tuya/Smart Life) when starting out. Learn about the new Matter standard when you're ready to expand.
- Buying too many devices at once — Start with 4, get comfortable, then expand. Check our Compatibility Checker before adding new devices.
- Ignoring 2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz — Most smart devices only work on 2.4 GHz. This is the #1 setup issue for beginners. See our Troubleshooting blog for fixes.
