Most Smart Home Problems Have Simple Fixes

Smart home devices are reliable — but when something goes wrong, it’s usually one of the same 10 issues. This guide covers every common problem with Homiio devices and gives you a fast, step-by-step fix for each one.

Before diving in: if you’re setting up for the first time, check our Beginner’s Guide first.

Problem 1: Device Won’t Connect to WiFi During Setup

Cause: Almost always caused by being on a 5 GHz WiFi network instead of 2.4 GHz.

Fix:

  1. Connect your phone to your 2.4 GHz network before setup
  2. Open the Tuya Smart app and retry device setup
  3. Keep your phone within 3 feet of the device during pairing
  4. If still failing, hold the device button 5–10 seconds to reset, then retry

Problem 2: Device Shows “Offline” in the App

Fix:

  1. Pull down to refresh the Tuya Smart app
  2. Restart your WiFi router
  3. Unplug the device for 10 seconds, then plug back in
  4. If still offline, delete and re-add the device in the app

Problem 3: Alexa Says “Device Is Unresponsive”

Fix:

  1. Say “Alexa, discover devices” to re-sync
  2. In the Alexa app → Skills & Games → Tuya Smart → disable and re-enable
  3. Sign back into your Tuya account when prompted

See our Alexa Academy for full setup guidance.

Problem 4: Google Home Can’t Find My Device

Fix:

  1. Google Home app → + → Set up device → Works with Google → search Tuya Smart
  2. Say “Hey Google, sync my devices”
  3. If still missing, unlink and relink the Tuya Smart service

See our Google Home Academy for a full walkthrough.

Problem 5: Smart Bulb Flickers or Dims Unexpectedly

Cause: Incompatible dimmer switch.

Fix: Smart bulbs require a standard on/off switch — NOT a traditional dimmer. Replace with a standard switch or use a Homiio Smart Switch.

Problem 6: Motion Sensor Not Detecting Motion

Fix:

  1. Mount the PIR sensor at 6–8 feet high, angled slightly downward
  2. Tuya app → device settings → set sensitivity to High
  3. Note: sensors have a 30–60 second cooldown between triggers — this is normal
  4. Replace battery if device is 6+ months old

Problem 7: Door Sensor Not Sending Alerts

Fix:

  1. Check phone notification permissions for Tuya Smart app
  2. Verify magnet alignment — both pieces must be within 10mm when door is closed
  3. Tuya app → device → Alarm Settings → confirm alerts are enabled

Problem 8: Smart Plug Not Responding to Schedule

Fix:

  1. Tuya app → Me → Settings → Timezone — confirm it matches your local timezone
  2. Delete and recreate the schedule

Problem 9: Tuya App Crashes or Won’t Load

Fix:

  1. Update the app from the App Store or Google Play
  2. Force close and reopen
  3. Android: Settings → Apps → Tuya Smart → Clear Cache
  4. Uninstall and reinstall (your account data is saved)

Problem 10: Device Reset to Factory Settings

Re-add the device in the Tuya app as if it’s new. Follow the Beginner’s Guide setup steps. Reassign any automations to the re-added device.
