Smart Home Glossary: Every Term You Need to Know (A–Z)

Smart home glossary dictionary with devices — Homiio

Smart home technology comes with its own language. This glossary defines every term you’ll encounter — from setup to advanced automation — in plain English. Bookmark this page and refer back whenever you hit an unfamiliar term.

A

Alexa — Amazon’s voice assistant, built into Echo devices. Controls smart home devices via voice commands and routines. See our Alexa Academy for setup guides.

Automation — A rule that triggers one or more device actions automatically based on a condition (time, motion, sensor state). Example: “When motion detected after 10 PM → turn on hallway light at 20%.” See our Automation Ideas guide.

Away Mode — An automation that turns off all devices (or simulates occupancy) when you leave home.

B

BLE (Bluetooth Low Energy) — A short-range wireless protocol used for initial device setup (commissioning) in Matter-compatible devices. Not used for ongoing device control.

Bridge — A device that connects one smart home protocol to another. Example: a Zigbee bridge connects Zigbee devices to your WiFi network so they can be controlled via an app.

C

Commissioning — The process of adding a new smart home device to your network and app. Usually involves scanning a QR code or pressing a button on the device.

CSA (Connectivity Standards Alliance) — The organization that created and maintains the Matter standard. Members include Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung.

D

Device Discovery — The process by which a voice assistant (Alexa, Google Home) finds and adds new smart home devices. Triggered by saying “Alexa, discover devices” or “Hey Google, sync my devices.”

Dimmer Switch — A wall switch that controls light brightness. Important: Smart bulbs are NOT compatible with traditional dimmer switches — they require a standard on/off switch.

E

Echo — Amazon’s line of smart speakers and displays with Alexa built in. Acts as a hub for Alexa-compatible smart home devices.

Energy Monitoring — A feature in some smart plugs (including Homiio Smart Plug) that tracks real-time and historical power consumption of connected devices.

F

Firmware — The software embedded in a smart home device. Manufacturers release firmware updates to add features, fix bugs, and improve performance. Most Tuya devices update automatically.

G

Google Home — Google’s smart home platform and app. Controls compatible devices via voice (Google Assistant) and the Google Home app. See our Google Home Academy.

Google Nest — Google’s line of smart home hardware including smart speakers (Nest Mini, Nest Audio), smart displays (Nest Hub), and smart thermostats.

H

HomeKit — Apple’s smart home platform. Controlled via the Apple Home app and Siri. Requires HomeKit-compatible devices or a Matter bridge.

Hub — A central device that connects and controls smart home devices using protocols like Zigbee or Z-Wave. WiFi devices (like all current Homiio products) do NOT require a hub.

I

IR (Infrared) — A wireless communication method used by TV remotes and AC units. Smart IR blasters (like the Homiio IR Remote) can control any IR device via app or voice.

L

Local Control — When a smart home device processes commands on your local network without sending data to the cloud. Faster response times and works even if the internet is down. Matter devices prioritize local control.

Lumen — A measure of light output (brightness). Higher lumens = brighter light. The Homiio Smart Bulb outputs up to 800 lumens — equivalent to a standard 60W incandescent.

M

Matter — The new universal smart home connectivity standard that allows devices from different brands to work together. Supported by Apple, Google, Amazon, and Samsung. See our full Matter Explained guide.

Mesh Network — A network where each device acts as a signal repeater, extending coverage throughout your home. Used by Thread and Zigbee protocols.

Motion Sensor (PIR) — A device that detects movement using passive infrared technology. See PIR below.

N

Neutral Wire — A wire required by most smart switches for power. Some homes (especially older ones) don’t have a neutral wire at the switch. The Homiio Smart Switch works without a neutral wire.

P

PIR (Passive Infrared Sensor) — The technology used in motion sensors. Detects changes in infrared radiation (heat) caused by movement. The Homiio PIR Sensor has a 128° detection angle and 5m range.

Protocol — The communication language a smart home device uses. Common protocols include WiFi, Zigbee, Z-Wave, Thread, and Bluetooth.

R

Routine — A sequence of automated actions triggered by a single command or schedule. Example: “Goodnight” routine turns off all lights, locks the door, and dims the bedroom bulb. See our Automation Ideas guide.

S

Scene — A saved combination of device settings that can be activated with one tap or command. Example: “Movie Scene” dims lights to 20% and sets color to warm amber.

Skill — An Alexa extension that connects third-party services and devices. The Tuya Smart skill connects all Homiio devices to Alexa.

Smart Plug — A device that plugs into a standard outlet and adds smart control to any connected appliance. See the Homiio Smart Plug.

Standby Power — Electricity consumed by devices when they’re “off” but still plugged in. Also called “vampire energy.” Can account for 5–10% of your electricity bill. Smart plugs eliminate this. See our Energy Saving guide.

T

Thread — A low-power mesh networking protocol used by Matter for battery-powered devices like sensors. Requires a Thread Border Router (built into many modern smart speakers).

Thread Border Router — A device that bridges the Thread mesh network to your WiFi. Built into Apple HomePod mini, Google Nest Hub 2nd gen, and Amazon Echo 4th gen.

Tuya Smart — The platform powering all current Homiio devices. The Tuya Smart app controls your devices, and the Tuya Smart skill/service connects them to Alexa and Google Home.

V

Voice Assistant — An AI-powered assistant that responds to voice commands. The three main smart home voice assistants are Amazon Alexa, Google Assistant, and Apple Siri.

W

WiFi (2.4 GHz vs 5 GHz) — Most smart home devices (including all Homiio products) use the 2.4 GHz WiFi band. It has longer range and better wall penetration than 5 GHz. Always connect your phone to 2.4 GHz during device setup.

Works with Alexa / Works with Google Home — Certification badges indicating a device is officially compatible with those platforms. All Homiio devices carry both certifications.

Z

Zigbee — A low-power mesh networking protocol used by many smart home devices. Requires a Zigbee hub or coordinator. Some Homiio sensors support Zigbee in addition to WiFi.

Z-Wave — Another low-power mesh protocol, similar to Zigbee but on a different frequency. Less common than Zigbee. Requires a Z-Wave hub.
